"Singapore... The Lion City of Southeast Asia"
 |
Singapore, June 21 - 22, 2018 |
Singapore.... hmmm... what can I say about this country? It's the first country that I was able to tour (though technically we arrived at Kuala Lumpur first). It's close to my heart since I was able to celebrate my silver years here. The hype in this country is real. Singapore is indeed a high-end city, with towering skyscrapers, clean and organized streets, amazing mode of transportation, and mixed culture. For Filipinos, you can actually compare the size of Singapore to Quezon City in Metro Manila. I can say that in our two-days stay, we are able to visit the landmarks and tourist attractions in the Lion City of Southeast Asia. Without further ado, let me start sharing our itinerary in Singapore for two (2) days.

JUNE 20, 2018
How To Get There?
From Manila, the usual set-up is that you will book a flight from Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) to Changi International Airport. The earliest flight you can book is around 5:00 AM (Cebu Pacific, direct flight) and the latest will be 10:40 PM (Air Asia, connecting flight with Kuala Lumpur International Airport, including layover period). Direct flight usually last 3 hours and 45 minutes, with airfare for one-way flight ranging from Php 4,000.00 - Php 8,000.00 per pax (usual airfare without promos).
Is it your first-time to travel abroad, here is my blog regarding tips and info you need to know about international flights. Click in the link below:
Tips for First-time Travelers Abroad
However, due to a round-trip promo we got from Air Asia last June 2017 (one year before our trip) which is only Php 4,211.70 per pax (all-in: including GST, processing fees, etc.) plus Php 1,620.00 travel tax, we decided to flew to Kuala Lumpur first and from there, we took a bus to Singapore (June 20, 2018). If you have time, you can explore Kuala Lumpur City Center (KLCC) before heading to your pick-up point to Singapore.

Super Nice Bus. Indeed a super nice bus ride to Singapore |

Super Nice Express Check-in Counter at Imbi Station |
 |
Pick-up point of Super Nice Bus at Imbi Station |
You can book your bus ahead online to skip the long-lines and secure your seat in the bus. Grassland Express & Tours gave us a good booking to Super Nice Bus. Below are the details:
- Bus Type: Super VIP. The bus have wi-fi connection, charging ports for your gadgets (USB outlet) and reclining seat with foot rest (2x1 seating).
- Ticket Price: Php 932.80
- Travel Time: 6 hours (approximately)
- Check-in Time: 10:30 PM (exactly)
- Pick-up Time: 11:00 PM
- Pick-up Point: Imbi Station (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia)
- Drop-off Point: Golden Mile Complex (Singapore)
Yup... you heard it right. Exactly 10:30 PM. The lady in Super Nice bus counter did not allow us to check-in earlier (around 10:00 AM), she really insisted for us to check-in at exactly 10:30 PM. Haha. Talking about "on-time" operations. The bus ride to Singapore is really comfortable.

Arrival at Singapore
If you are to arrive at Changi Airport, you can ride your way through Changi Airport Line and drop-off to Tanah Merah (EW4) Interchange Station and transfer to the East West MRT Line. Later in the blog, there is a discussion about the train system in Singapore. I'm pretty sure that you can take also the bus from Changi to your target hotel, but it may vary depending on your destination. There are also taxis in Singapore, however, expect them to be kinda pricey.
If you took a bus just like we did, before leaving the borders of Malaysia, you have to get down from the bus and enter immigration first. We arrived at around 4:00 AM in the Malaysian immigration. Then afterwards, ride the same bus. After a 30 - 40 minutes, you will reach the borders of Singapore and declare your arrival at the immigration. If you took a plane, same procedures on arrival to international airports will apply. We arrived at Singapore at around 6:00 AM (June 21, 2018). Don't be surprised if the sun rises at around 8:00 AM and sets at 8:00 PM. That is actually the normal set-up in Singapore.

Singapore Flyer welcomed us to Singapore.. So excited! |

Bus System of Singapore
Before I continue, let me discuss a bit about bus system in Singapore. Singapore has an organized bus system. You are only designated to board and depart from buses on designated bus stops. Also, buses are classified by their codes (e.g. Bus 2, Bus 174e, etc). At the bus stop also, you can look for the routes of each bus, so that you can identify the perfect bus to ride on for your destination.
 |
Clarke Quay Bus Stop |
If you are about to get off the bus, you have to press the STOP button ahead of time, before your target bus stop.
 |
You can find the STOP button on the handrails of the bus |
Accommodation
Upon drop-off at Golden Mile Complex, we took a bus towards Opp S'pore Country Club bus stop.
- Pick-up Point: Golden Mile Complex bus stop
- Drop-off Point: Opp S'pore Country Club bus stop
- Fare: 1.30 SGD
From there, we walked to our booked hostel, 5Footway.inn, which is located at Boat Quay (along Singapore River). This is actually a convenient choice since Boat Quay is just a few walk away from Clark Quay Northeast MRT Line station and Clarke Quay bus stop. Also, it's a few meters away from Merlion Park, one of the must-go destinations in Singapore. The hostel has reasonable service. You have to self check-in using their check-in machine. Make sure to have your passport and booking details with you. Below are the details of our booking:
- Price: Php 4,389.23 (for 3 pax, good for one-night stay)
- Check-in time: 3:00 PM onwards
- Check-out time: 12:00 PM
- Note: You can leave your baggage prior your check-in time. We are also able to take the shower before the check-in time as well.

Breakfast at BK Eating House
Around 8:00 AM, we had our breakfast in BK Eating House, located South Bridge Road, Boat Quay, Singapore. Here was my meal:

Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and Museum (Chinatown)
We walked our way towards Chinatown where the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and Museum is located (along South Bridge road also). This is a perfect place to experience and witness the Buddhist culture. Chinese visit this place to offer prayers to Buddha Maitreya and other deities. Photography inside is allowed.

LRT and MRT Train System in Singapore
I applaud the amazing train system in Singapore. Their stations are really great and the trains are not congested, unlike our set-up in the Philippines. It is convenient and perfect for touring the city.
 |
Northeast Line MRT |
 |
Trains are properly secured |
Below are the different MRT and LRT lines of Singapore:
- East West Line (EW)
- North South Line (NS)
- North East Line (NE)
- Circle Line (CC)
- Downtown Line (DT)
- Bukit Panjang LRT (BP)
- Sengkang LRT (SE)
- Punggol LRT (PE)
 |
MRT and LRT Train stations with respective prices (from Chinatown NE station) |
MRT and LRT lines are strategically interconnecting with each other in almost all important locations in Singapore. If you can see in the map that the lines are intersecting, it means that there is an interchange between the lines in that same station. Just look around the signs pointing to the stations you are heading.
 |
MRT and LRT Train Lines Guide Map |
Tickets can be either be bought from ticketing booth or the General Ticketing Machine (GTM). Single-ride tickets are actually reloadable up to 6 times. If you are planning to conduct city tour, it is highly recommended to purchase the Singapore Tourist Pass instead. It gives you unlimited access to trains and buses in Singapore. It cost 20 SGD (with refundable 10 SGD upon return of ticket to designated ticketing booths). Remember to check the closing time of booths and be sure to return it not later than five (5) days of purchase to get the refund.

From Buddhist temple, we rode the MRT Northeast Line (NE) to our next destination, HarbourFront.

Singapore Cable Car Ride to Sentosa Island
Sentosa Island in Singapore is an island filled with tourist destination such as Madame Tussauds, S.E.A. Aquarium, Resorts World Sentosa, Universal Studios Singapore and many more. I recommend either of the two convenient ways to Sentosa. One is via Sentosa Express (monorail system connecting HarbourFront of mainland Singapore to different stations around Sentosa Island), which is actually free. The other one, which we chose, is via cable car. You get a chance to see the view of Singapore mainland and Sentosa Island in a higher perspective. The Mount Faber Line connects the HarbourFront station to Sentosa Station (Sentosa Island) and Mount Faber Station.

We got an awesome offer from Klook in booking our Cable Car ride for Php 1,348.00 per pax, included with lunch or dinner. The lunch offers a meal in Spuds and Aprons, located at the peak of Mount Faber. The dinner offers a buffet at Good Old Days Restaurant in Sentosa Island. I guess it's very obvious that we picked the latter since we prefer more foods. Upon arrival to ticketing booth, present the voucher to get the skypass, as well as the voucher for your preferred meal. Another advantage of booking via klook is that you go straight to "online booking" counter to skip the long lines.

Universal Studios Singapore
The hype of the trip was none other than Universal Studios. This theme-park is just filled with attractions and rides, inspired from your favorite Universal Studios movies. I was able to relive my childhood with my love for Shrek, Madagascar, etc. Experience action like you're in the scenes of Transformers, Jurassic Park and more. Due to many attractions to experience and long lines, you need to allot your daytime itinerary here. Shout out to Klook for our voucher in Universal Studios. We were also able to skip the ticketing line and enter directly.

- Chicken Rendang with Coke: 15.50 SGD
- Strawberry Ice Cream: 6.50 SGD (in cup)
We had our dinner after exploring Universal Studios at Good Old Days Restaurant, as part of our voucher from Klook in our Singapore Cable Car Skypass. From Waterfront station (just a few walks away from Universal Studios), we rode the Sentosa Express for free to Beach Station. We had a reasonable dining experience at Good Old Days Restaurant.

Vivo City at HarbourFront
After dining, we headed took the Sentosa Express from Beach Station to Imbiah Station. With few walks, we were able to get back to Sentosa Station and rode again the cable car back to HarbourFront Station. Getting back via cable car is an amazing experience for we get to see Singapore at night.

Singapore at night. It's way better in the actual view. |
Upon arrival at HarbourFront station, we explored Vivo City. It's a mall near HarbourFront.

D' Happy Factory
After exploring Vivo City Mall, we headed back to our hotel by riding the Northeast MRT Line and just walked from Clarke Quay to 5footway.inn.
- Pick-up Point: HarbourFront Station (NE1)
- Drop-off Point: Clarke Quay Station (NE5)
- Ticket Price: 1.70 SGD
Since I am turning 25, we decided to have some drinks until the 22nd of June comes. There is this amazing beerpong bar beside 5footway.inn, D' Happy Factory. By the way, Boat Quay has a wide selection of drinks and bars (most of them are Bollywood-themed). D' Happy Factory has this hi-tech beerpong table that automatically scores, guide the players when it is their turn, and it even has cool lights. This is definitely the best place to have your "sip and dip" experience. All you need to do is order at least one jug (which is actually a pitcher) of either Guiness, Heineken or Tiger Beer to play beerpong. We ordered a jug of Tiger Beer for 29.40 SGD. Also, one of the bartenders there is Filipino (we were not able to get his name though).

Expect lots of live crustacean inside aquariums along Boat Quay |

Jogging along Singapore River
Sun rises at around 7:00 AM - 8:00 AM in Singapore. Around 7:00 AM, my bestfriend, Gianna, and I decided to have a morning jog along Singapore river. It's actually a good idea since we are able to witness beautiful reflections of the city in the river, as the sun rises.
 |
Boat Quay beside Singapore River. Take note of the beautiful reflections |
 |
Peaceful morning along the bars of Boat Quay |
 |
Some stretching before the jog |
From Boat Quay, we jogged towards the Cavenagh Bridge, where we passed the Singapore. The said bridge was made exclusively for pedestrian use.
 |
Cavenagh Bridge |
 |
Hey there Cavenagh! |
After crossing the Cavenagh bridge, we were able to reach the park along Queen Elizabeth Walk. I was not able to take pictures but from there, you can see the Victoria Theatre, Asian Civilizations Museum and some gigantic mirror balls. As we jogged further, unintentionally, we were able to reach the Esplanade Bridge and the Jubilee Walk where you can see the Singapore Flyer and Marina Bay Sands.

Merlion Park
At the other end of Jubilee Bridge is the Merlion Park. Funny how we were able to be there unintentionally, just by jogging. It's a good thing that we've been there earlier since there are not much people crowding for photos. In here, you will also get to understand how the famous Merlion symbolizes Singapore as the Lion City in Southeast Asia.

Haji Lane
We jogged back to our accommodation at 5Footway.inn for free breakfast. They serve toast, cereal, coffee, milk tea and chocolate. When we were ready, we headed to Haji Lane at around 10:00 AM by riding a bus, with our Singapore Tourist Pass.
- Pick-up Point: Clark Quay bus stop
- Drop-off Pint: Opp The Gateway bus stop
Haji Lane is famous for the amazing artwork in the street. There are plenty of spots that will be a perfect addition for your Instagram posts.

At the end of Haji Lane, you will reach North Bridge road, where you can see a glimpse of Muslim culture, particularly at Masjid Sultan.

And just in front of Masjid Sultan is Singapore Zam Zam, where we had lunch. For the first time also, I was able to know how deer tastes like.

Little India
Just by walking along Arab Street to Serangoon Road, we went to Little India to immerse ourselves in Indian Culture inside the Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple. This temple is dedicated to Veeramakaliamman, who destroyed ignorance to restore and maintain order. Hindus come here to pray for promotion, health, fertility and security in foreign land (perfect reason for tourist...hehe). Photography inside is allowed.

Singapore Botanic Gardens
Inside the bustling city of Singapore lies the only UNESCO World Heritage tropical garden, the Botanic Gardens. Admission is free, except for the Orchid Garden (5.00 SGD). We decided not to visit the Orchid Garden and just explore the garden for free. There are a wide range of flora and fauna that you can see. We took the Northsouth MRT Line at Orchard Station.
- Pick-up Point: Orchard Station (NS22)
- Interchange: Newton Station (NS21 transfer to DT11)
- Drop-off Point: Botanic Gardens Station (DT9)

St. Andrew's Cathedral
After exploring the gardens, we wanted to cool down and visit a mall near to St. Andrew's Cathedral. We took the MRT from Botanic Gardens to Citylink via Circle Line.
- Pick-up Point: Botanic Gardens Station (CC19)
- Drop-off Point: Esplanade Station (CC3)
Before heading to St. Andrew's, we had some iced latte at Mcdonald's Marina Square, which is kinda pricey at 4.60 SGD. From Marina Square, we walked to St. Andrew's Cathedral by passing through Citylink. St. Andrew's Cathedral is the largest cathedral in Singapore. Of course, I will make the opportunity to visit the church and thank God for the blessings, especially this Singapore trip on my 25th birthday.

Chinatown Food Street and Souvenirs
One of the recommended place to buy cheaper souvenirs is at Chinatown. We also decided to have our dinner at Chinatown Food Street. We were able to pass through here from our itinerary at Buddha Tooth Relic Temple. This time, we took a bus from St. Andrew's to get back here.
- Pick-up Point: City Hall bus stop
- Drop-off Point: Opp Hong Lim Complex bus stop

Our meal costs:
- Set A Platter: 15.00 SGD (good for 3)

We also bought some souvenirs at Chinatown like ref magnets, ballpens and keychain with nailcutter. The prices ranges depending on the item but I'll be posting the ones I bought.
- Ref Magnet: 2.00 SGD
- Ballpen Set: 4.00 SGD (set of 4)
- Ballpen and Key Chain with Nail Cutter Set: 4.00 SGD
Marina Bay Sands
After filling our tummies and buying souvenirs for our friends and families, we took the train from Chinatown to Marina Bay Sands via Downtown Line. Marina Bay Sands is a man-made resort in from of Marina Bay. The hotel is famous for the largest infinity pool on top of it. You can also shop high-end brands and experience a mini-Venice canal experience inside the mall.
- Pick-up Point: Chinatown Station (DT19)

Departure from Singapore
After watching the light and sound show by the supertree groves, we headed back to 5Footway.inn to get our luggage. We actually had our check-out in the morning and just left our things in their storage room.
- Pick-up Point: Bayfront Station (DT16)
- Interchange: Chinatown Station (DT19 transfer to NE4)
- Drop-off Point: Clarke Quay Station (NE5)
We headed as quickly as possible to Bugis station, one of the stations that has the Singapore Tourist Pass counter. Spontaneously, the pick-up point of our bus to Kuala Lumpur is also at Bugis Station (Exit D). We literally ran to be at the counter before closing time at 9:00 PM to have our 10.00 SGD refund. We really looked like we're in Amazing Race Asia as we dashed our way to Bugis Station from Boat Quay (I felt sorry for my luggage by that time...hehe). The effort was all worth it, as we made it at the counter (we were actually the last customer entertained by the counter. Thank God! Haha).
- Pick-up Point: Clarke Quay Station (NE5)
- Interchange: Little India (NE7 transfer to DT12)
- Drop-off Point: Bugis Station (DT14)
After successfully retrieving our refund, we refreshed ourselves at the food court at Bugis Junction. We also waited at Starbucks, just to be able to surf the net.
- Watermelon juice: 2.80 SGD
- Starbucks English Breakfast Tea Latte Grande: 6.30 SGD
